FPIES

My happy little boy whose nothin' but smiles most of the time.

Well, our little guy had a serious puking episode several weeks back.  He was happy all morning, ate breakfast and a few hours later he was puking bucket loads every 15 minutes.  This continued for five hours straight until he was pale, his body exhausted from the strain and he was lethargic.  Very scary.

I called the pediatrician and was told he had a stomach bug and to give him pedialyte... which Ty hated.  After Matthew came home from work in the evening Ty was fine and back to his usual self.

This morning, we had a similar incident.  Several hours after breakfast the puking began.  It lasted a few hours and now he is sleeping on his Daddy.  This time around was not quite as severe as the last episode but I knew this was no stomach flu.  So, I went into sleuth mode and did some researching and came up with FPIES.  Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome.

The culprit for my little guy seems to be oats.  His first episode he had oat cereal mixed with some yogurt.  Todays episode was a mixed grain cereal which is why the reaction was less severe.

Now that I know this is a trigger for him we will stay away from it at all costs.  My goal now is to convince my pediatrician that this was no stomach flu and that hopefully they have heard of this rare syndrome and can place the information in Ty's chart in case he happens to have a severe enough reaction that would land him in the hospital.

For now, I thank God for the information that is available at our fingertips.  My baby is resting, he is safe and we know how to proceed.

Have you dealt with any scary food allergies or illnesses that you had to self diagnose?  Do you have a little one going through FPIES?  Please feel free to leave a comment below so we can encourage one another.

Lookin' up,
Dawna

Hey, Wow, it's so hard when they are this age. Hope you have little Ty Guy diagnosised! (SP) I wonder if kids are more suseptiable to food allergies if their parents are? So sorry for all the spelling errors. I don' feel that deprived that I can't have several foods (mayonaise, cream cheese, garlic) after all these years, but it was very hard at first.

Hope little guy is cured! Love looking at the pics on here and seeing what all you Sargents are up to!

Have a Healthy, Happy New Year!!

    Love
    Christie
